Across the nation, states and cities enact safe and simple building codes that provide constituents with clarity, consistency, and process transparency. Missouri should be no different.
Safer + Simpler Missouri seeks to simplify building codes to facilitate economic development, and improve residents’ health and safety.
The Problem
St. Louis County’s 89 local governments use 42 separate building codebooks, comprising 809 chapters totaling about 17,000 pages. For comparison, that’s nearly double the IRS Code’s 9,000 pages.
Only one other County in the U.S. deploys building codes like the scores of fragmented local jurisdictions in St. Louis County, which, for St. Louis County, results in a system that causes confusion and higher costs, discouraging investment and growth.

Our Goals
Seeking to simplify building codes.
Our goals are to pursue and deliver consistency in codes to ensure residents and professionals have equal access to healthy and safe buildings. Through these efforts, we hope to improve economic development opportunities by modernizing the process of building and investing throughout the state of Missouri.
We will do this by engaging in good-faith conversations about these issues with stakeholders in professional sectors, associated organizations, and government officials. Join us in the pursuit of consistent regulations and a Safer + Simpler Missouri.
